Before as the title suggests I write about where I am with my present day fishing I just want to paint a picture of where it all started for me and how my current day approach is influenced by what I learned in my early days as an enthusiastic but clueless youngster.
I started fishing when I was around eight or nine years old ,me and a couple of mates would fish our local park lake with very little success but occasionally one of us would bank a small roach or perch and that would be enough to keep the seemingly impossible dream of catching one of the larger residents of the lake alive .
My own and my friends fishing never really developed that much over the next few years and even though our list of venues had expanded curtesy of my friend Marks dad, our newly obtained transportation enabled us to travel further afield to other lakes and the occasional trip to the river lee ,but pretty much the catches were always the same small roach and perch.
It wasn't until around 1978-79 at the age of thirteen things changed , a local fisherman approached the local council with a plan to dredge our silty old park lake and stock it with a reasonable head of fish. His aim was to start an angling school to get kids into the sport .The plan was approved and work started , by the start of the summer holidays the school had opened and eager parents were dropping there ten year olds off ,paying the six pounds (I think it was around that amount ) and then going off to work to return later that day to a tired but happy child. It could only have happened so easily in those days ,could you imagine the miles of red tape that would be involved if someone wished to do the same today in 2019 , It would be enough to put anyone off. Anyway that's where I got involved I made myself known and useful and before long I was running errands to get the teas from the park café or the local Wimpey's and more often helping out with the younger kids constantly untying the tangled lines ,a skill I had become an expert in ! My reward for my hard work was to be able to fish the newly stocked venue at the weekends when the school was shut and most of the time I was the only person there.
The fisherman that started that school back in 1978 and who I consider the man and mentor that made me the anger I am today was Fred Crouch , For those who are familiar with that name no further words are needed ,for those who are not just google the name and you will see why I am so lucky and grateful to have known and to have been guided by him in my early years .
Thank-you Fred as although you are know longer with us there are many of us who will never forget what an influence you had on our lives and our fishing , God bless and rest in peace.
The last few years have seen a change in what I want to achieve from my carp fishing . Over the last ten years or so a lot of my fishing time has been spent on a local estate type lake with some beautiful but not massive carp as residents .Surface fishing is my chosen approach at that venue and my fishing time is normally short and focused on the times I have discovered are the most productive which on that water tends to be either first light until the sun hits the water or the last hour of daylight in the evening. I do occasionally fish conventional bottom rig type set-ups but where I feel I excel is floater fishing that's where I feel most confident . I have discovered and developed a couple of massive edges over the last few years which in the right conditions can be very affective and on the limited occasions I have shared my secret I have seen one or two fish a session anglers double or quadruple their catches. My discovery is so simple and obvious when explained I am astonished that even Google is blissfully ignorant of its existence. I have in the past considered sharing my discovery ,I even have a letter that I wrote addressed to a very well known sponsored angler that at the last minute I decided not to send, The reason why I decided not to send the letter ? I don't expect to make any money from my discovery ,in fact fifty percent of it can be bought from your local tackle shop and to be honest its the most Important part, A few freebees might be nice from the chosen tackle manufacturer but some recognition would be even better ,just like Kevin Maddox was credited to be one of the inventors of the hair rig and even Fred crouch claimed to have invented one of the first boilies ,But I doubt I would even get that, my edge would be out there ,someone else would be acknowledged as the inventor and I would be pissed off beyond belief and catching less as a result.
I have now chosen to share my knowledge and discovery with someone who I trust and who I have known for over ten years . We are currently developing a better alternative to the existing that I use . Due to his years of hard work building what I consider to be one of the best up and coming tackle suppliers trying to squeeze into a market dominated by huge multinationals, if anyone deserves to benefit from my discovery Tony at cat and carp does and even though it will be a one season wonder until its cloned and marketed by others ,we will have put it out there first !
Anyway nuff said more to follow
